Upcoming improvements to accuracy of subscriber counts

UPDATE (2/6/12):

We are ready to proceed with removing closed accounts from all user subscriber counts on Thursday, February 9th.  A mentioned previously, all users will see a one-time adjustment to their total subscriber counts.  For further details about how this affects your channel, you should view your YouTube Analytics "Subscribers" reports.

-----------------------------------------

UPDATE (1/11/12):

We will be holding off on the single day adjustment (the January 12th date is being postponed) until we can address some discrepancies we found in synchronizing the public counts with YouTube Analytics. Everyone involved in this project is determined to ensure that this change is clearly understood by users, so we will postpone the single day adjustment until we can ensure that both the public count and YouTube Analytics data are consistent and unambiguous. We will let everyone know once we have a firm date in mind.
However, the enhanced techniques for despamming new subscriptions will be implemented as scheduled (tomorrow), as there are no such complications. We will continue to keep everyone up to date on how this develops.

-----------------------------------------
1/10/12

At YouTube, we take the accuracy of subscriber counts seriously.  Subscriber counts are a reflection of a creator’s level of engagement with viewers, and a serious source of pride in the community.  Many creators also use subscriber counts to measure their expectations for how many views their new videos should receive, by comparing total subscriber counts to number of views received from subscription sources in YouTube Analytics.

As a result, we are enhancing our efforts to ensure that all subscriber counts are as accurate as possible.  On January 12th, we will take the following steps to improve the quality and integrity of subscriber counts across the site:

  1. Remove inactive and closed accounts from total subscriber counts.  We will remove all such accounts from subscriber numbers on January 12th, and continually update subscriber counts as subscribers become inactive or close their accounts.
  2. Improve techniques for preventing artificial inflation of subscriber counts.  Recently, we’ve seen a rise in creative agencies and vendors that claim to increase subscribers while complying with the YouTube Terms of Service.  In most cases, those claims are false; the purchase or gaming of subscribers is a violation of our Terms of Service.  Accordingly, we are taking the following steps to prevent some users from artificially inflating their subscriber counts:
    • Effective January 12th, we will implement a more rigorous system that will prevent new subscriptions generated from these malicious sources from being added to subscriber counts.
    • Beginning January 12th, we will retroactively adjust subscriber counts to not include subscriptions generated by artificial sources on an ongoing basis.
    • Please note: While we are updating subscriber counts to remove such subscriptions from the totals, we will not stop delivering videos to these subscribers, even if they are artificially created accounts.  This means that even if we mistakenly remove a subscriber from a subscription account as invalid, this will in no way affect your views.
By ensuring the quality of subscriber counts, we hope that this metric will be a more valuable data point for creators.  Creators who have not attempted to inflate their subscriber counts should only see a limited drop--resulting from the removal of inactive and closed accounts--while users who have benefitted from abuse will get a reality check.

  1. Sounds good. Thanks for cracking down. I doubt the drop will be "limited" though, haha... I expect to see 5,000+ be removed for inactivity, at least.

  3. I do not support everything in this blog post. The removal of inactive or closed accounts is unnecessary. It's basically removing "old success". Just because it occurred so long ago does not mean it doesn't matter and that it should just be deleted and forgotten. An example would be, the NBA and some of it's older records. Just because Michael Jordan played over a decade ago and won championships so long ago means you can just wipe his record and take his ring? No it does not, because he worked for it. This is basically the same thing. A lot of the older Youtube channels, some of Youtube's first supporters, would lose a lot of their credibility because of this. Most of the time, the subscriber count is what makes a YT channel. In these days and times, it's all about the number and killing that would kill Youtube in so many areas. It would be downright discouraging. I'm ok with removing fake subscribers, that's only fair. But removing REAL subscribers just because they're old? Makes absolutely no sense....

    1. It's not just old like subscribers from a year ago. But old as in inactive or deleted accounts. So they are not actually subscribers anymore. Either they deleted their accounts or they haven't been on youtube for, well however long counts as inactive. Probably over a year. So it's not like a record, similar to NBA, but it's supposed to be current stats, followers. MJ's twitter account will adjust to any new follower or if any leave. YT should as well. In my opinion anyway.

    2. I agree with this fully! if the accounts were fake that is one thing, but just because someone hasn't used their account in 3 years is alot like deleting your bank account. what if they wanted to use it again! its just unfair to people who had a lot of ubscribers, because they will look like they are losing the most subscribers, and this could create a negaive downtrend, people might join the bandwagon thinking that it is actual people leaving, when in reality it is youtube violating someones privacy! leave it alone youtube! please..... your new channel interface already sucks enough, don't take our subscribers too.

  4. I disagree with Greg. Youtube's subscription service works just like any other subscription service, magazines, netflix, etc. If someone no longer uses it, they don't count as subscribers. When netflix announces how many subscribers they have, the number doesn't include people who have stopped using netflix, it only includes people who are still using it.

  7. @Camcreations,

The Youtube Subscription Service is different for so many reasons. Unlike those magazines and subscription services, who have hundreds of editors, employees, and let's not forget the money to fund them, it's not the same with a single Youtube channel, ran by a single person most of the time whose worked hard for everything they earned. Sometimes even people who have dedicated their lives, quit their jobs, or even dropped out of school to continue their careers as a full time Youtuber. Killing their subscriber count would be killing something that they'd worked extremely hard for. Some people think it's JUST a number that can be rebuilt, that's not the case. The subscriber number represents a persons hard work, and it shows their success. So like I said, sure it'd be accurate, but you'd be ridding a person of their "award". A sub number is an award for hard work, not just some service # and just because a person is no longer using Youtube it can just be cut in half. Youtube has always been unique, doing this would only make it just like all those other subscription subscription services out there....

    1. I see your point, and it's a good one. But it seems like the subscribers are counted as bounty points. It IS a subscription, which generally means currently active.

  8. Thanks. YouTube is new media, it and we cannot progess based on old glory. I'll lose thousands but it makes no difference, they're not watching anymore.

Hopefully this will inspire a new generation of content creators to rise up.

  9. @Matt Thomas

Old success, is what I mentioned in my previous comment. It's a reflection of what it took a person so long to get and it should stay there for years to come. I'm speaking from a viewpoint of a person who has been using Youtube actively since around 2006. And not someone who just joined in 09'-11' and thinks every YTber with a high subscriber count should just have their numbers cut in half because the only reason they have them is because they're "mainstream" or "popular". Contrary to popular belief, even some of the most popular Ytbers started at the bottom, and I believe that's how everyone should start...

If you work hard, you'll eventually get the #'s like everyone else....

    ReplyDelete
  10. This is great news! I wonder if they have a percentage of how many accounts are inactive or closed so we can get a bit of an idea of what kind of drop to expect.

Hopefully in the future they can get their system to just recognize when an account is closed and remove it from subscriptions immediately!

    ReplyDelete
  11. It won't affect our channel much since we have taken the time to go through our subbers list and delete dead accounts ourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agree with Greg... At some point someone enjoyed the content you created on your channel, and especially for smaller channels (like myself), subscriptions are the foundation of ones "YouTube status". Just because a subscriber quit using their account, doesn't mean that the channel creator didn't earn the subscription. I definitely agree with removing the "fake" accounts, but it seems almost unfair to remove an inactive account, just because it isn't generating views/revenue.

    ReplyDelete
  13. But at the same time I understand that YouTubes been working towards maximizing revenue (i.e. new layout that encourages viewers/potential add clickers to watch more videos which in turn generates more profit + making "sub partner" channels that simply generate revenue for YouTube but don't provide the customization/promotion that a full partner channel gets), and I guess since this is helping out the bigger channels (the money makers obviously), then it wont really matter if the smaller channels lose subscribers. Not complaining, just making sure I don't sound like a mindless idiot...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I for one will be glad all the closed accounts are removed from my subscriber lists. The ability to send mass PMs to your subs has been a worthless feature since if a single sub / contact has their account closed, the entire attempt fails.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @Greg and Mike: Subscriber counts shouldn't be for how popular you are. It should be for how many people are subscribed to you.

People with closed and inactive accounts obviously aren't watching your content anymore, at least not with that particular account.

Newspapers don't get to include everyone who bought one of their papers as the total number of people subscribed to their service. They can't include canceled subscriptions either. That's dishonest.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Youtube thanks for doing this for us. I used to try and remove the closed accounts and such from my subbies list, but after 3,000 it gets tough because I had to scroll thru about 120 pages of subbies to look at each sub. So thanks again for helping us keep it clean.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Don't know if someone at youtube can answer this or not, but will this change also solve the problem of inflated subscriber counts due to box4box'ing? TheWillofDC, for example.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If I understand this right, does number 2 mean it will help cut back on those carbon copy "increase" PM's?

By which I mean the ones we all get that go like "I really like that video you posted. How would you like more views and subscribers? Etc etc..."

Over the lifespan of my YouTube account, I've blocked numerous accounts that kept sending me the same message. I'm hopeful this helps get rid of them.

  20. I agree. This is long overdue. When I started YouTube back in 2005, the most Subscribed didn't even have 20,000. There are a lot of people who have fake Subscribers.

  21. Does "inactive and closed" refer to just closed accounts, or accounts that have just become inactive over the years?

  22. this good and bad. (o.O) to start off. it been nice to see who look at my video. now what i fear of my 500 sub is going to drop down to 10 or less. but that is ok, i can live with that. but i got a friend who not been on for long time. my fear is that if his count get close. all his video will be gone forever. it be shame to see really good video get delete forever. that will really hurt my fav video list. i wonder if youtube really think on this?

    ReplyDelete
  23. While I have no problems with this, I wonder when YouTube will address issues that are a lot more pressing, such as the fact that people you have blocked can still send you private messages and that they can still contact you by hitting "reply" on comments you left on other people's videos. Having your inbox spammed by people you have blocked is much more annoying than having a few inactive subscribers in your sub count.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hey Greg you want to measure "old success" ? you have Video Views that say plain and clear how much success your channel has had. This is a good move.

  25. This'll hit me hard. I'm a beginner on YouTube and I have 29 subscribers and most of them subbed when I was still starting out. I bet I'll lose about 27 of them.
Other than that, I guess it's a pretty good idea! A subscriber number means nothing if they don't watch your videos or give feedback.

  31. YOU CAN'T DO THIS! I've been on Youtube for 2 years with this channel and I've made it to 1400 subs. Please! I don't want to go back down to 500 subscribers just because many of my subscribers are from a year or 2 ago. I've worked very hard with over 300 videos to get to the count I'm at. Don't take this away from myself and everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe Youtube has missed a very important aspect that many Channels are essentially cheating and inflating their subscriptions on a large scale by basically using the SUB 4 SUB scheme. Youtube needs to crack down and eliminate those youtube partners who basically are depending on a Sub 4 Sub scheme to get subscribers. As you are aware already Sub 4 Sub is truly a meaningless way to gain subscriptions.

Here is a perfect example I would like to flag that is so obvious, it blows my mind how they can carry on like this and Youtube do nothing.
The All4tubekids channel has sub4subbed it's way to the top. Then, when this channel reached 48,000 subscriptions, (not subscribers) youtube put a limit to how many subscriptions you can have, 2000. However this channel is allowed to continue sub for subbing. Today it is at 52,389 subscriptions!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. @pankakes123

If you have 1100 subscribers that have closed accounts how in the heck does it matter if they get deleted off of your page. They're gone from everywhere else on YT. If they aren't watching your videos, they aren't a subscriber, so they should be removed. I'll probably lose up to 200 myself, but I'm entirely OK with that, because they aren't real subscribers anyway. If only 20 of my 875 subbers actually watch my vids, I wouldn't mind seeing my subscriber count being cut down to just those 20.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm okay with this idea.

I've long supported a similar move to only show the channel owner "active subscribers" (suscribers who "click through" to a video)

This is pretty much the same idea.

But I might suggest you do this in stages, to not ruffle everyone's feathers all at once.

Remove remove dead accounts starting with oldest first. (closed and banned counted at their ban/close dates)

6 years not logged in. (1st week)
5.5 years not logged in. (3rd week)
5 years not logged in. (5th week)
4.5 years not logged in (7th week)
    ... etc.

I'd say this might be the better way to do things, firstly because, there will no doubt, be lots of complaints from certain sectors all at once, if you clean it all out in scoop, and 2nd, and there will be certain LEGIT, Uploaders, who will see the HUGE ONE time drop as extremely upsetting and discouraging.

Which is maybe not the goal?

Changes should be done in smaller pieces, gradually.

They aren't talking about removing people who subscribed to you a long time ago. They are talking about removing old and inactive youtube accounts. Accounts people have made but haven't used in ages, maybe because they made a new account and didn't delete the old one, maybe they forgot their password? Or maybe they just don't sign in any more. They won't be taking away people who subscribed to you a long time ago.

  38. This post is very vague... Like, how long of a time is an account considered to be "inactive" ? Will the subscriber be removed even if they are not inactive, but just not clicking on their videos? Also, will the subscriber get a message from youtube listing all of the channels they were removed from? Some youtube channels update after 3 months, and yet that shouldn't determine that the subscriber base to be inactive as well. Please clarify with exact numbers, 'cause I don't want to write down all the things I'm subscribed to in case I'm removed!

  41. Hey, YOUTUBE - How about doing the same with removing DISLIKES that were made by robots through clone and shell accounts?

Also, you are now talking about using a NEW UPDATING Moving average on views on subscribers by eliminated the old wrong totals.

If you can do that with DISLIKES and LIKES, then DISLIKE / LIKE BOTS that are used to attack competitors (I have 2000 dislikes waiting for youtube to remove off of 60+ videos in the last 6 months) and Like Bots to increase their own videos ratings, these total votes would clear themselves.

Youtube needs to move to a 2 week moving average of Likes/Dislikes creating a real time current ratings ratio (times total views) than using the old sum total ratios that can easily be distorted.

Youtube was able to cut down on LIKING your own video through multiple accounts. I HOPE you cut down on DISLIKING other's videos using similar tech.

It's very easy now the the like and dislike charts to see a above average spike in DISLIKES that are coming from an attack vs say a NEW HATED VIRAL VIDEO.

  46. I think the inactive part is too vague. For example, what limit is it? One week? A month? It's confusing to me. Also, plain and simple, the inactive part is unfair to the old YTers. I just don't like that section, but whatever.

  48. Do you know if this will affect non partnered channels? I currently have about 900 subs but barely break 100 views, sometimes even 50 views is hard. A lot of my subs are inactive, but maybe not fake. Don't know, I wish you could see how active your subscribers were and cut the ones that don't watch your videos. Maybe one day

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi guys--you can think of "inactive accounts" as no different than closed accounts. Example inactive account would be legacy, non-Google YouTube accounts. Don't worry, we don't have some complicated algorithm that scores channels as either "active" or "inactive" and adjusts the counts accordingly. If we remove them from your count, that user has no way to access their account.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sounds good ;)

What about the dislikes from various dislike bots?
Are you going to do something about that? Maybe delete those fakeaccounts which are used for that?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really think this is a good idea, as inactive subscribers give us false hope that are videos will get this amount of views all the time but, then when a video doesn't we get all annoyed and frustrated because we have so many inactive subscribers. I currently have 150 subscribers and just recently got this but I know that I probably only have about 30-50 active subscribers.
So it will be hard to see me drop back down under 100 which was my goal to reach before the end of last year.

Commentators, they might have a job, school or college, and others might lose their internet. Not only are you wiping out good people, your wiping out their happiness for their success. I know not many people were happy for the new layout, I know I wasn't. I much preferred the old one, much easier to access videos. 'Out with the old, in with the new!', I suppose. Well, hear me out YouTube, YOUR RUINING SOMEBODY'S CAREER.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I really hate people who think they somehow know what's best for a website/company. The new layout was designed to increase views. This was designed to increase subscriber accuracy so inflated accounts sink back to the bottom where they belong. What does a subscriber matter if they're not watching your videos? Views is what determines your reach and how successful you are/have been. Views > subscriber counts. Without accuracy, it's just a pointless number children use to throw around to make themselves feel more important. Grow up.

A quick look at vidstatsx.com or socialblade.com reveals that hundreds of key creators including Bieber (like him or not), Rhianna, DisneyPixar, Kina Grannis, David Choi and endless others have been reported by YouTube's API as having lost ALL their subscribers. Our livelihoods and reputation are dependent on a billion dollar beta-test by Google.

Sure i would appreciate the realization of how many subs actually watch my content, but i am two subs away from 2k, and i've worked so hard for a solid year posting consistent content in order to keep gaining the support of the youtube community, and after referring to vidstatsx, it shows that my subs will drop by 112. While this is but a minor drop, it is a major setback. And if they continue to remove inactive subscribers, then you'll end up gaining subscribers in vain, because an inactive one will be lost. It's really saddening to see all of this. Clean up your act, YouTube. Listen to the community that got you to where you are today.

  70. How come most of my videos don't show ads anymore ?? I'm fed up with those tricks...

  71. This is a good step, I don't know why so many people are against it.. I guess they are just too much fed up with having more subs instead of video views...

I myself like to have more video views instead of more total subscribers, I mean honestly do you rather want to have 5k subs where 2k of those are inactive or fake and then only get like 1k views on each of your vids?

That's then kinda disappointing if you think WOW I have this many subs but my vids are barely watched because they are inactive!

  72. Sounds good and i think it a good idea removing all the inactive subscribers, its kinda funny how many channels have none or small amount of subscriber after you done this. I dont understand why people will make a fake community to make them look as if people are Subscribing and watching there videos!

  73. My channel has dropped off (since algorithm change on December 14th) from a high of 32k views per day down to 600 views per day. My videos are no longer being suggested but video that has been directly stolen from my channel and uploaded by others is now being "suggested." I saw 2 examples of that 5 minutes ago. This seems highly unfair to those of us that play by the rules.

  78. This is long over due. too many "sock" and accounts with "docs dropped" on them out there. This shall hopefully level the playing field. Some "Partners" here at Google's product are involved in industrial sabotage other partners. "TROLL WARS" after 4 years has digressed, and yet evolved into an art form of cyber - espionage. This is only one step in the right direction. The second phase is to have more "Report" and "flag" options to quell the daily trollin, hating, and hate speech videos. Cudios to Google Creators for the first in many positive changes.

  79. It is refreshing to read different Blogs to get a new perspective from different sources. No matter how much I read it never ceases to amaze me how many people have different ways of optimizing their sites that are effective yet vary from the main stream of typical SEO methods. The reason I feel these websites do so well is not because of optimization but the genuine use of new, fresh, well written content. I wish you all the best and keep up the good work. Thank you allowing me the the privilege of reading your blog.

  81. I understood the explanation of the reduction of members.
There are many idle accounts and even false in YouTube.
Maybe create a campaign explaining the importance of Google company here in Brazil is a good idea to get more viewers and subscribers.
I am keen to collaborate with a campaign like this. I am proud to be part of Google, the Internet always believed and always will believe, this company helped a lot with him to science.
The United States has the merits by the advance of information transmission. A victory for science.
    You are to be congratulated.

  82. I disagree with these actions taken. Youtubers work hard to gain subscribers.
I agree that yes it is pointless in having a deleted channel subscribed to you, but their is always the action of reopening your account after a period of time, and to find that this action is no longer available is wrong. Also to users who have been around youtube a long time, their numbers will surely drop so much.
But I am even more against the inactive accounts. People that use youtube for more than watching videos, may take a break from youtube for a period of time will come back to find their channel deleted. Or what about inactive accounts were there is still viewers? May people get bored of youtube and leave their accounts, but they may still get a good number of people watching their videos. I watch videos still of inactive accounts.
Youtube have made too many changes, with stronger copyright laws, design changes, and the fact everytime you watch a video an ad appears before it. But this is enough.

  86. Can anyone tell what is going on? I reached 6000 subscribers, then it fell it one by about 300 subscribers. Then it got up to 6400 and then its just been dropping since about 5 days ago. This is so out of character for my channel. Anyone know what is happening here.

    Thanks.

  95. The problem that is occurring now is that youtube is deleting active accounts from your youtube subscriber numbers.. I just had 218 people subscribe to a channel I work with in one day and their subscriber numbers only went up by 3. We did a test with twitter and said we would sub back any new subs. I got 52 subs in that hour and youtube credited me minus -11 for the hour.

So this is how great the new system is people. What it actually does is allow them to commit business fraud at their will. When you are a youtube partner its a genuine, legal. business and if they are ripping off your subscribers and deleting active subscribers it effects your income and they are costing you money. I have channels where active users have subscribed more than three times and youtube is deleting their subscriptions. It wont be long before youtube end up in court for fraud over this. It is costing you money as a video up-loader.

  97. Its a nice idea to delete the inactive and closed accounts in Youtube Hits. But it needs a certain duration of time which inactive accounts are subject to delete,so that the subscriber also can anticipate if their accounts is remaining active or closed.
