Content ID allows rights holders to automatically detect uploaded content that contains potentially infringing works. This is possible through a system that creates a digital “fingerprint” of a video when it’s uploaded to YouTube. These fingerprints are automatically compared to partner-provided references. In case of a match, the rights holder can choose to monetize it, block it from the site or keep track of viewing metrics. Because of the vast scale of YouTube (remember: 1 hour of content is uploaded to the site every second), this is an automated process.
On to the news—the video fingerprint now offers better protection against copyright infringements, specifically in the form of cropped and mirrored videos. Below are examples of new matches against modified videos.

Excuse me for being cynical, but I think that while this will indeed help catch more copyrighted content, it will also increase the incidence of false content ID. I mean, have they even fixed the system flaw that allows certain copyright holders the ability to simply affirm ownership to have a video taken down without having to file a DMCA, giving the alleged perpetrator no ability whatsoever to refute the claim legally?

It seems that some people that using the ContentID system don´t even know how to handle the system or just false claiming content to generate money from other content creator. This is really painful.

I have had more of my videos disabled from monetization than I can count. Nearly every time, it is a mistake on YouTube's side. Sometimes I win my case, very quickly, other times I am ignored. It's a frustrating situation, and I'd like to be partner. This process if flawed. I am hoping once I become a partner I will be treated a bit better.

ReplyDeleteStill though, your system is seriously flawed in the fair-use area. If a match is made, the tie should go to the uploader: allow users to monetize their fair-use content during the 10-day waiting period between when a claim is filed, and when the rights-holder finally "okay's" the fair use.
YouTube needs to crack down on those who abuse the Contet ID system. Companies such as Rumblefish have a reputation for claiming content they don't own and they refuse to honor many of the disputes. Please implement a system where if a dispute is filed the Content ID user has 10 days to respond or the video is released. Also implement a system that helps the user fight against abusers such as Rumblefish who right now hold all the cards. Make Content ID work more like the DMCA
ReplyDeleteI made a video last year in which I used my own videography, photography, narrative, narration and I used a well known video editing package to edit it and I added a musical soundtrack as background that were generated with this video editing package. My video started to do very well and roundabout 300 000 I got a note which basically stated that my rights to the all of the content could not be verified. I tried everything in my ability to solve this and I am now in the possession of even a signed letter from the video editor company that states that I have all rights including commercial of any material that I can generate with the package. I have send repeated submissions as was suggested and all that happened was that I receive a note weeks after that says my video has been disabled from monetisation. Everything on my account is marked as in good standing. I am confused about this and it hurts me as I have no income at present and I was hoping to make some income from my videos. I am also integruous and use only my own material and as described above. My video now has over 850 000 views but no further response are forthcoming. Reading Youtube forums it is clear that this is a widespread problem and many users believe that there are a serious flaw in the software. But how do we fix this. I have now remade my video and excluded all music so that all sound is just my narrative in my own voice and the background recorded on the beach on which I made the video. The new version took me several weeks already because I want to make sure it is of high quality. But reading the forums some users suggest that they have repeated monetisation blocks. I would love to build my channel and use the momentum that my video created to launch my other videos as well but have no confidence left to do so. Frankly, I consider to leave this dream and try something else because to much effort goes into this with no guarantee of any success.

DeleteI too have had my videos demonetized and they contained all my own videos and I had permission from the music content owner to use their music. It is frustrating!

Great idea about Content ID!!! I didnt know about ContentID until i read this post. But what if the video is modified and the ContentID will be changed? I think that is really hard to determine.
