Expanding custom thumbnails to more partners



Over the past few months, we’ve been testing the impact of custom thumbnails on viewer watch time and engagement. Today, we’re expanding access to custom thumbnails for more YouTube partners, and over time, we aim to make them available to all partners in good standing.

Why not just give custom thumbnails to everyone?

As we’ve mentioned before, we focus on watch time when suggesting videos because it improves overall audience engagement on YouTube, and opens up more revenue opportunities for you. We’ll continue to recommend videos whose thumbnails help drive viewers to actually watch them, over videos that are clicked and then quickly abandoned.

When custom thumbnails do not accurately reflect the content they represent, they can annoy and disappoint viewers. These videos perform poorly on watch time, so they will become less prominent on YouTube. We’re continuing to test how partners use this feature to see how they better drive viewership on YouTube.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be granting access in weekly batches to partners. Partners need to have been active for 30 days and in good standing. When you get access, you should only upload images that are representative of your video, ideally featuring prominent stills from your video. Thumbnails must comply with our Community Guidelines, so abuse of this feature can result in strikes against your account and account termination.

Displaying thumbnails that accurately and appealingly represent your content is the best way to ensure long-term growth for your channel.

  7. I am so pumped. I have been plagued by terrible thumbnails and soon (EVENTUALLY) I'll be able to actually use the frame I feel supports the video best! Huzzah and hooray and whoop whoop!

  13. Wait I don't have this feature. I have a monetized account and I checked for about 4 hours in my video manager and on the videos and it still won't let me customize a thumbnail. Am I not eligible for this, please please someone tell me why? I need to know. I literally have 12 thumbnails ready. My friend has this feature and I am doing better than him. Why don't I have it D:

  21. My ThingzThatSuck channel has above average audience retention on every single video and the custom thumbs aren't available. I'm getting double my subscriber numbers in views. I have another channel that I hardly ever upload to and it got the thumbnail option today. Get your stuff together, YouTube.

  27. All I can say is "PLEASE" consider me! I've put a lot of time and money into a video that is "stuck" with thumbnails that do not reflect the video.

    I'm in Good standing, have an adwords account and a Google Play account.

  31. Hi! My youtube channel is Patpie65 , and i have made 0.05c through AdSense! (like a boss) I am a youtube partner, and i would really like the ability to upload custom thumbnails. So please review my videos for whatever reasons neccessary (gaming videos) And if they're good, please can u allow custom thumbnails for my channel? thx

  33. It seems to choose randomly. I have two account one that is over 4 years old and I just got the scheduled uploads. On my newer one from May, I don't have anything but the longer than 15min time. But a kid who I went to school just created a channel a month ago and has Custom Thumbnails. Can we have some sort of idea on how this stuff is being chosen?

WTF is wrong with you and "partners", I want to have custom thumbnails without having to sign a contract with anybody nor monetize anything at all, it's a damn basic feature that should've been enabled for ages. That, and a REPEAT button that I-CAN'T-BELIEVE isn't there yet, instead of stupid and ugly youtube designs which only make us turn our head 40 degrees to the left all the time, and that totally make the Inbox notifications and button dissapear, and finally make horrible and confusing buttons without any color for LIKE and DISLIKE.

  46. My account TittyTwisterBand is in good standing, and I of course could really use this feature, My thumbs are aweful for a couple of my vids.
    Also, The monetization process is confusing. Some clear guidelines would be great. I write my own music, record it and record my own videos. But some are stuck on monitoring for possible review. I sell on cdbaby and itunes so sometimes it 3rd party matches them to me. I clear that up and then it gets stuck in monitoring. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  54. I don't want to be a "Partner," yet some of my videos still get more than 14,000 views. That said, it's extremely frustrating not to be able to do something as fundamental as uploading a custom thumbnail, especially when some "blessed" users, including eight-year-old kids who produce absolute crap, get that functionality. Why can't YouTube just make it available to everyone, then disable it for those users who misrepresent their crappy videos with better (probably stolen) images? YouTube handles copyright infringements on a case-by-case basis. Why can't the company handle custom thumbnail abuse the same way? It's really irritating.

  55. frustrated I don't have this. Almost always the thumbnails chosen for me are like pics of me that look like I'm in mid-sneeze or chewing food. I agree with the above post, just let everyone have it! I'd be thrilled to pieces just to be able to choose the perfect still image from my videos.

  57. Hello. Please tell me how about the artists, who submitt their own production clips? Should't you allow that thumbnails feture immediately for them? In my opinion in that rare cases we gain oposite outcome that is you intention (mentioned in your post above). After submitting my first video clip and discovering that YouTube has chosen the random thumbnail for that, I was wondering if shouldn't be better to delete that clip from your service completly. Please think about it, how would you feel if you (as an artist) find that instead of your Album cover photo you have some random picture..? Thank you for understanding what I wrote here and please turn that function (thumbnails) on.

  58. Really looking forward to this feature. I've been using the time waiting for the thumbnails to turn on to make 1280x720 thumbs of my videos and I've kept on revising them. I think I've nailed it now. Can't wait to see what they look like. I'd post a link to an example from my Google+ account but that feels a bit spammy.
