Over the last year, we have been evolving our product to make channels a central part of every YouTube visit. We tested the waters over a year ago by adding a subscription Guide to the homepage. This small change resulted in the number of new subscription per day doubling, so late last year we placed the Guide throughout the site and on our mobile apps.
These changes have made channels ever more important and subscribers even more valuable. After all, with the Guide on every page, subscribers can see your channel every time they visit YouTube.
But what happens when they click on your channel in the Guide? Today, viewers see a plain feed view of your channel instead of the branded version that you have curated. This is because today’s channels don’t incorporate the Guide. Soon, we will be rolling out a version of channels which will allow every click from the Guide to take the user directly to your channel. This will allow subscribers to access your channel page seamlessly, as you have designed it, from any page on YouTube on any app.
What can you do now? Well for starters, we recommend holding off on re-skins or branding changes to your current channel. That time will be better spent building what you need for your new channel. We are excited to share the specs and start unveiling the product over the next few weeks.

All this gives us now is a banner, and its nothing special because everyone has it!
So the last design was to promote conformity and a uniform design, now they tell us the new format will go back to the old ways where we could customize our channels? Well I am hopeful I have interpreted this correctly.

Translation of the word "consistency": designers will now be constrained by the limits of the least capable platform. This is not a good thing for either creators OR viewers. A tailored experience for each platform is best. I hope you will reconsider.

DeletePlease, make the channels how they used to be back a couple years ago. Where partners could completely customize their channels with branding features to give each channel a different feel, that is why so many people worked to become a YouTube partner, now that title is nothing because anyone and their pet dog can become partnered, so at least let us have customization. Now it seems like YouTube is just taking the creativity out of it, it's suppose to be "YOU" Tube...

ReplyDeleteIt's nice and all that you are trying to find new ways to improve your website. Yes, change is good. However, just ask yourself this: Is it at ALL neccessary?! Just think how frequently you are doing this. Just leave us alone! If you want to try new things, get YOUTUBE USERS to participate with trials on their pages, count up a tally of how many users like or don't like it and let US, the users of this freaking site decide! No, scrap that, JUST give us something else, like customization on our youtube channels! You said this: "Your channel is your brand and identity on YouTube. " Right, when now every channel looks the EXACT same with the dull gray and white. Every think about that Youtube? Give us some more options and customization so our channels can have COLOR again. I hate gray and white. Give me colors to choose from.

ReplyDeleteAs a channel designer for the past 3 years, I must say that have been... upset at the changes with the channel layouts... and recently getting partnered on my main account has given me more of a boost to make quality content for my subscribers... If every channel become the same, and banners are going to mean nothing anymore... I would honestly consider just leaving YouTube and become a freelance graphics artist/video editor... No reason to stay with a website that's going to change something that is already good and only creates more of a hassle in the community... That being said, my final decision will be made when I actually see the changes...

ReplyDeleteI think this is amazing. From a usability standpoint, making all the platforms behave the same is a good idea. You have to remember, YouTube "allows" you to be here. You don't have to use YouTube. You could use Vimeo, Facebook, or whatever else you want.

ReplyDeleteOk, so you want to bring back some channel customization options to YouTube users. That's great, all well and good. Do that. I, for one, believe we should be allowed to go back to a pre-Cosmic Panda channel layout of some kind, one that had FAR more customization options and chances to express individual user's creativity than we have now. If you're moving towards something like that, or something at least similar, then that'd be a good move. However, the real thing I want to address in this post is this little nugget:

Wow, the subscriber gains have DOUBLED, you guys! Fucking DOUBLED! Great news, except...uh, why does it look like less people are watching now?
...And this would be about the part where you'd hear crickets chirping, because so far, no one has an answer.
That's all well and good that new subscriber per day gains are going up in some form, because people care about that sort of thing, but what about views? I'm surprised (though maybe I shouldn't be) that there's ZERO MENTION of the widespread consensus amongst YouTubers that viewership has gone down for just about everyone in recent months in this article, nor of how this great new thing will help address that. Subscriber counts may be going up, but clearly not enough of those subscribers are watching our videos. What's the point of having X-amount of subscribers if only Y-amount of people consistently watch your content?
Let's do some math together. What if some random YouTuber has, say, 35,000 subscribers, but their view average is 10,000 or 15,000 per video, on average? Those view numbers might seem good, but compared to the subscriber count in that example, that user would, if they're lucky, only see roughly a 43% subscriber-to-viewer turnover. That's not even HALF of their subscriber base watching their content. What's the point of all this great shit you're touting about the Guide upping sub counts if the views people are getting are not only not reflecting this oh-so-wonderful gain, but are actually DROPPING?
Even top-tier YouTubers are suffering view losses because of this, and on a YouTube where it's so much more difficult than it was before for smaller YouTubers to get noticed and gain notoriety, this is hurting the little guy more than ever. I'd just like to know when you're going to address this issue, or if you're even going to acknowledge it at all before you're done going on and on about how great the Guide app is and how wonderful New Channel Design #27 That Surely No One Will Hate will be and blah blah blah.
Although I suppose admitting that the whole Cosmic Panda channel design was a huge fuck-up, and pretty much everything after it up to this point has also been heavily criticized by the average user, wouldn't look too good for the company image, huh?
I hope that whatever new fancy design changes you've got up your sleeve really do give users more customization options and allow them to express more individual creativity than is allowed right now...though I'm not holding my breath.

ReplyDeleteI was kinda distressed when I first saw the design. But after visiting some of the channels who are using it I actually think it's pretty slick. Granted I've never liked huge changes and the last time the channel page changed it was quite horrible. But looking at the larger video thumbs and more content on the page I really have to applaud the team on this one.
